A good site has good content

Hey everyone!

So I’ve been promoting my blog on Facebook a lot lately to drive more traffic to my site, and it seems that its caught the interest of a number of people because I’ve had people asking for advice about what best first steps to take when setting up a blog. I thought about it and the first thing that came to mind was site optimization, I mean if you’re going to start a blog you’d want to have readers right? Well, if you want readers you’re going to want to make sure they can find your blog on search engines. If it’s one thing I want to preach when it comes to SEO it would be content. Bill Gates once said, “Content is king” and it’s true.

So why is content so important? Well a lot of it has to do with Google and let’s be honest here, when you think search engine Google will more likely than not be the first thing to come into mind.

  1. Google likes to see relevant content. What this means is: if you have a blog about cooking but a lot of your content is just nonsense rambling or links to other websites, Google’s going to mark down your site. If your blog doesn’t come up on the first page when someone Googles “cooking tips” they’re probably never going to see your blog. It’s not even just Google; think about it from a reader’s point of view. If you went to a blog for tips about car maintenance but all you found was nonsense wouldn’t you just hit the back button?
  2. Update the blog on a frequent basis. Nothing screams “dead site” more to Google than a blog that was last updated 6 months ago. Your blog will just get thrown into the nether regions of Google’s billions of pages. Again, think about the reader. Nothing’s more of a turn-off than a site that hasn’t been updated since the stone ages. This doesn’t just apply to blogs either; the same applies for all social media like Facebook and Twitter.

I’m not saying content is all there is to having good SEO, but it’s certainly a good place to start. A blog thrives on traffic and the best way to do that is having content. The more content you have and the more relevant it is the higher your site’s Google ranking will be and that’s the number one way to get traffic. Hopefully this helps for the friends out there.
